Chapter 13

Looking Ahead

Bitcoin's long-term future is not just a price story. It is also a question about how the network stays useful and secure as the block subsidy keeps shrinking over time. That issue is built into the protocol from the start.

Each halving reduces the new BTC entering circulation, which strengthens the scarcity narrative but also shifts more importance toward transaction fees and higher-layer usage.

Reasonable people disagree on how smoothly that transition will work. Some see a healthy fee market emerging as adoption deepens. Others worry about whether fee revenue alone will be enough during quieter periods.

What seems most likely is that Bitcoin keeps its conservative base layer while the surrounding ecosystem experiments above it. The future of Bitcoin may look less like one chain doing everything and more like one chain anchoring a wider stack.
