Chapter 3

Scaling Options Compared

Not every system labeled "Layer 2" inherits Ethereum security the same way. Rollups, sidechains, state channels, and validiums all aim to reduce cost and increase throughput, but they make different assumptions about where data lives and who can challenge bad behavior.

Rollups dominate Ethereum scaling today because they offer the best balance: cheap execution on L2 with a credible path back to L1 if operators misbehave. Sidechains like early Polygon PoS were faster to launch but relied on their own consensus rather than Ethereum's.

State channels suit high-frequency interactions between a fixed set of participants — think payment channels — while rollups handle general-purpose smart contracts at scale.
