Chapter 8

ZK Privacy Applications

Zero-knowledge proofs enable Ethereum-native privacy without leaving the ecosystem for dedicated privacy coins. Projects like Railgun and Aztec shield token balances and transactions inside ZK circuits, then settle proofs on mainnet or L2. Users interact through specialized wallets or integrations that handle proof generation and relay submission.

Railgun focuses on shielding ERC-20 transfers and DeFi interactions — users can unshield to public addresses or stay private within supported protocols. Aztec builds toward a privacy-first L2 with encrypted state and programmable private contracts, treating privacy as infrastructure rather than an add-on feature.

ZK privacy on transparent chains still faces compliance questions: some systems publish viewing keys or allow auditors to inspect shielded activity. The technology demonstrates that strong privacy and programmable finance can coexist — adoption depends on wallet support, gas costs, and how regulators classify shielded DeFi activity.
