Chapter 13

The Future of Accounts

Account abstraction is converging with native protocol changes, passkeys, and chain abstraction. EIP-7702 lets existing EOAs delegate to wallet code in-transaction, blurring the line between legacy accounts and smart wallets without forcing users to migrate addresses.

Chain abstraction promises one balance and one identity across L2s — users stop managing bridge transactions and native gas on every network. Intent protocols and solvers fill the execution layer while smart accounts hold keys and policies.

EOAs will persist for power users, scripts, and legacy tooling, but new onboarding flows will default to smart accounts. The open question is whether users will understand what they control when the interface feels like Web2 — education and clear recovery paths remain essential.
