Chapter 12
The Multichain Future
The multichain debate has shifted. Early narratives pitched alt L1s as "Ethereum killers." Today most teams acknowledge Ethereum as the settlement and liquidity hub while L2 rollups absorb much of the throughput demand that originally pushed users to alt chains. The question is no longer winner-take-all — it is where value and activity accrue across layers and chains.
Chain abstraction — intents, unified balances, and wallet-level routing — could make the backend chain irrelevant for simple actions. A user might say "swap USDC for SOL" and a solver finds the cheapest path across L2s, Solana, and liquidity networks. Builders still pick chains for latency, grants, and where their users already are.
Value accrual remains unsettled. ETH benefits from L2 settlement and staking; SOL from transaction fees and MEV; ATOM and others compete for hub status in their ecosystems. The durable lesson from this course: evaluate chains on tradeoffs you can explain, not slogans on a landing page — and assume the landscape keeps shifting as tooling and user expectations mature.
