Chapter 15
The Roadmap
Ethereum's roadmap is less a calendar than a direction of travel. Instead of promising one giant rewrite, researchers group major goals into named phases that explain what the protocol is trying to improve: scale more, reduce harm, and keep node operation realistic.
The Merge is finished, but the rest of the roadmap is active research and engineering. The Surge is already visible through blobs and rollup adoption. The Scourge targets issues users feel indirectly, like unfair ordering and concentration in the validator supply chain.
Verge and Purge are about keeping Ethereum operable as it grows. Smaller proofs, lighter clients, and less historical baggage all help preserve decentralization by lowering hardware and coordination costs. The roadmap matters because it shows Ethereum trying to scale without abandoning the idea that ordinary participants should still be able to verify the system.
