Chapter 9

Bridge and DeFi Risks

Bridges are among the largest honeypots in Web3. They lock assets on one chain and mint or release representations on another, which means a bridge compromise can drain funds across multiple networks at once. Billions in losses have traced back to validator sets, multisigs, and smart contract bugs in bridge infrastructure.

DeFi composability spreads risk the same way it spreads yield. Your deposit in a vault may sit inside a lending market that depends on a wrapped token from a bridge you never consciously chose. Contagion is a feature of legos — until one piece fails.

Due diligence means more than APY. Ask how the bridge secures funds — native light clients, optimistic proofs, external validators, or a small multisig. Each design trades trust for speed and cost.

Diversify across protocols and chains when size warrants it. No single bridge or DeFi stack should hold more than you are willing to lose if its weakest link breaks on a Sunday night.
