Chapter 2

Why Compliance Matters

Ignoring compliance does not make rules disappear. Exchanges lose banking partners, projects face enforcement actions, and users discover too late that their jurisdiction blocks withdrawals or treats gains as undeclared income. Compliance is a cost of operating at scale — and a shield against sudden shutdowns.

For users, compliance affects whether you can deposit fiat, stake through a regulated product, or report gains correctly. For builders, it shapes entity structure, token design, and which countries see your frontend. For institutions, it determines whether treasuries and pension funds can participate at all.

Treat compliance as ongoing orientation, not a one-time checkbox. Laws evolve, enforcement priorities shift, and products that were gray yesterday may be clearly in scope tomorrow. Staying informed reduces expensive surprises — this chapter sets up why that effort is worth it.
