Chapter 12

The Future of DePIN

DePIN's bull case ties to macro trends: AI inference at the edge, energy transition, smart cities, and user fatigue with centralized platforms that rent access without sharing upside. The bear case is incumbents absorbing the idea — telcos and clouds offering revenue-share programs without tokens — while crypto-native networks fight utilization and regulation.

AI inference could be the demand catalyst if DePIN compute networks undercut centralized GPU rental for bursty workloads. Telecom partnerships may mainstream wireless DePIN as offload infrastructure rather than consumer MVNO plays. Energy flexibility markets expand as batteries proliferate.

Watch for standards bridging DePIN proofs to traditional procurement, clearer securities and telecom guidance, and metrics that replace node counts with paid gigabytes, rendered frames, and map kilometers updated. The sector matures when tokens are optional for customers — but still align the people deploying the physical world.
