Chapter 11
DePIN Risks
DePIN stacks crypto volatility on top of operational and regulatory risk. Smart contracts may be sound while the business fails — ghost coverage, manufacturer backdoors, securities treatment of miner sales, or a token overhang that crushes provider economics for years.
Securities risk appears when projects sell hardware or tokens with implied profit promises tied to managerial efforts. Geographic restrictions may limit where nodes can legally operate — especially wireless and energy.
Mitigations include diversifying across networks, favoring projects with fiat or stablecoin revenue, tracking on-chain utilization metrics, and avoiding leveraged hardware buys at peak token prices. If rewards require exclusive vendor hardware, you are exposed to that vendor's roadmap and pricing power.
