Chapter 5
Sensors and IoT
Sensor and IoT DePIN networks turn physical measurements into on-chain commodities: weather readings, air quality, street-level imagery, noise levels, and geospatial traces. Hivemapper rewards dashcam contributors; weather protocols incentivize backyard stations; noise and pollution projects target urban datasets incumbents never built at fine granularity.
Buyers include logistics firms, insurance models, autonomous vehicle stacks, and DeFi protocols that need real-world triggers. Privacy matters too: imagery networks blur faces and license plates; location trails may need differential privacy before public release.
Evaluate sensor DePIN on data uniqueness (is this feed cheaper or better than satellite and government sources?), hardware cost per useful datapoint, and whether demand contracts exist beyond token emissions. Niche, high-value datasets survive; generic temperature feeds face commodity competition.
